Economic Development Director Steve Weathers says $8 billion to $10 billion in combined public and private investment could land in downtown Fort Myers and the surrounding area over the next ten years, with roughly 60 acres in play. The pipeline includes a Lee Health campus valued near $1 billion, the stalled yacht basin rebuild, a proposed City of Palms sports and entertainment complex, luxury residential towers, and new commercial space. Weathers called it one of the largest urban redevelopment opportunities in the state. Residents at recent meetings have pushed back on traffic, infrastructure capacity, and the risk of losing whatever it is that makes downtown feel like downtown. If you live inside the loop, this is the decade that decides it.

🔗 The School Board Approves a $3.1 Billion Tentative Budget on a Split Vote
The School Board of Lee County signed off on a tentative 2026-27 budget of $3,122,296,479, with Melissa Giovannelli and Debbie Jordan voting no. It carries a $1.22 billion general operating fund and a $1.41 billion capital outlay budget, and reflects a $172 million cut in direct school funding partly offset by moving $52 million out of capital and into operations. The total millage rate was set at 5.271 mills, projected to bring in $869,294,241, which is 1.97 percent below the rollback rate. Jordan objected on the spending, saying a $5 million increase in security driven by overtime made her head spin, while Giovannelli warned that capital-to-operating transfers have tripled from what the district used to do.

The ballot covers U.S. Senate, governor, two state cabinet seats, congressional and legislative races, plus city, county, and judicial contests. The site had 198 teacher lists compiled, up from 177 at first publication, with an average need of roughly $656 per teacher. The requests are not extravagant: copy paper, pencils, books, emotional regulation tools, and classroom decor. District spokesman Rob Spicker responded that every school's budget already includes dedicated funding for basics like paper, scissors, pens, markers, and crayons. The effort grew out of concerns raised at a board workshop by Melisa Giovannelli and Debbie Jordan.

Florida's confirmed cyclospora count climbed to 342, up from 255 the week before, with Lee County reporting 30 cases and leading the region. Miami-Dade leads the state at 47 and Broward has 34. The outbreak now spans 15 states and more than 25,000 national cases, with Michigan alone logging over 12,000 and two deaths. Investigators traced the contamination to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms grown in central Mexico, recalled July 17, after initially looking at lettuce served at Taco Bell. For scale, the previous worst year on record was 2019 at roughly 4,700 illnesses nationally.

🔗 Cape Coral Moves to Fine Unlicensed Contractors Up to $2,500 a Violation
City Council introduced Ordinance 49-26 on Wednesday, creating local enforcement against anyone doing work without the proper state license. A code enforcement officer could levy up to $2,000 and a special magistrate up to $2,500 per violation. The city would add a $5 permit surcharge to cover an estimated $150,000 in regulatory costs, spread across a projected 30,000 building permits. City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn described a three-part plan: reactive enforcement from contractor referrals, proactive stings and surveillance, and a partnership with the state's Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Councilmember Rachel Kaduk was openly skeptical it would work. The public hearing is August 19.

🔗 Fort Myers Beach Starts Handing Out Orange Warnings Instead of Citations
The town launched a courtesy warning program that gives property owners a chance to fix code violations before formal enforcement starts. You get a bright orange notice listing the problem, a correction deadline, and the officer's direct contact information, and you have to reach out to confirm compliance. Emergency Services Director Phil Rizzo said the notices have been in use about two weeks and that most people call back within 24 to 36 hours. Town Council took first hearings on redevelopment at both ends of Estero Island. TPI, the Margaritaville developer, wants 60 hotel rooms in a five-story building 58 feet above base flood elevation on the 0.74-acre former Silver Sands site it bought for $7.1 million in 2023, with 46 parking spaces and 11 code deviations requested. On the south end, FMBH LLC is proposing a restaurant, tiki bar, six mobile trailers, 163 parking spaces, and public beach access on the 11.2-acre former Wyndham property at 6890 Estero Blvd., with a pool, lazy river, and permanent restaurant at least three years out. Former Mayor Tracey Gore called 60 units way out of scale for the neighborhood. The follow-up hearing is August 24.

🔗 Lee County Rewrites the Rules for Growth in the Southeast
The Local Planning Agency voted unanimously to advance changes to the Southeast Lee Plan, adding the State Road 82 Freeman Industrial property to a new Preservation and Innovation category and pulling Bonita Beach Commercial off the plan map. That new designation bars residential housing and requires central utility connections, major collector road frontage, significant open space, and natural area restoration, while a separate Conservation Community category caps density at 1.15 homes per acre. Principal Planner Katherine Burgess said the county is after something more interesting than the usual strip mall pattern. Marissa Figueroa of the National Audubon Society argued any density increase should be tied to permanent, enforceable conservation. Developers have filed 11 amendment requests since 2023, and commissioners still have to vote.

🔗 Fort Myers Is the Number One Destination in the Country for Gen X Movers
U-Haul's 2026 Midyear Migration Trends report, covering one-way rentals from July 2025 through June 2026, put Fort Myers first in the United States for Gen X arrivals. North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton came in third and Tampa eighth on the same list, with North Port fifth and Lakeland-Winter Haven sixth among millennials. Millennials make up the largest share of U-Haul one-way rentals with Gen X close behind, and together the two account for more than 60 percent of all of them. U-Haul builds the data from more than 25,000 rental locations across North America. It is one more explanation for the traffic.

🔗 Lee County Recycles at 87 Percent and Ranks Second in Florida
Lee finished second among Florida's 67 counties, behind only Palm Beach, which has nearly double the population. The county's adjusted recycling rate hit 87 percent in 2025, a nine point jump from 78 percent the year before and 12 points above the state's 75 percent goal. Residents and businesses recycled 2.2 million of the 3 million tons of waste generated, roughly enough to fill a thousand Olympic pools. Kenny Howell of Lee County Solid Waste credited education and flagged the usual mistakes: plastic bags, single-use batteries, and shaving cream cans. What does not get recycled goes to the Waste-to-Energy plant in Buckingham, which powers about 30,000 homes.

County commissioners approved purchase agreements for four properties under the land acquisition program. Two contiguous parcels at 9901 Stringfellow Road in St. James City on Pine Island cover 27.9 acres for about $1.4 million and 28.13 acres for about $285,000. A third, roughly 10 acres near Stringfellow and Monaco Lake Drive, went for $400,000 and sits next to Pine Island Flatwoods Preserve. The fourth, about 3.5 acres at 10301 Palm Beach Boulevard east of Fort Myers, cost $495,000 and folds into Orange River Preserve. The program now holds 31,773 acres.

🔗 An All-You-Can-Eat Sushi Chain Takes the Old Texas Tony's Building in Cape Coral
Sushi Masa signed a lease for the 6,723-square-foot freestanding restaurant at 738 SW Pine Island Road, a building that housed Texas Tony's Rib and Brewhouse until it closed in 2025 and a Sonny's BBQ before that. The landlord is South Florida Barbeque of Cape Coral Inc., with LQ Commercial representing the deal. Sushi Masa has run since 2010 and operates 13 locations, and this will be its fourth in Florida alongside Lakeland, Tampa, and Pensacola. The menu covers sushi, sashimi, hibachi, soups, and salads, with all-you-can-eat service. That corner of Pine Island Road has been dark long enough that people will notice.

🔗 The Hurricane Center Is Watching Two Waves in the Far Atlantic
Forecasters are tracking two tropical waves, both currently at near zero percent odds of formation over 48 hours and 20 percent over seven days. The first moves off the West African coast Tuesday with development possible mid to late next week as it heads west. The second sits several hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and could develop early to mid week before hitting unfavorable upper level winds near the Lesser Antilles. Neither is a near-term threat to anybody here. They do mark the shift into the Cabo Verde window, which is the stretch that historically produces the storms this coast remembers.
