π Lake Okeechobee Algae Bloom Nears Worst on Record
More than half of Lake Okeechobee is now coated in toxic blue-green algae, which one monitoring pilot called pretty close to the worst he has seen. A commissioned study estimated that a repeat of the 2019 bloom would cost the region about $5.2 billion and 43,000 jobs, and the bigger local worry is discharges heading down the Caloosahatchee toward Lee County.
π Leaders Warn Amendment 3 Could Slash Local Budgets
Regional leaders dug into Amendment 3, which would raise the non-school homestead exemption from $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028. Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter projected his city could lose roughly $28 million in 2027 and $47 million in 2028, and analysts warned that rural counties would feel it hardest.

A July 3 lightning strike at Fort Myers Beach killed 51-year-old Viktar Kiryk and sent three others who were in the water to the hospital. Cape Coral alone logged 239 strikes over seven days, and officials are urging everyone to get out of the water and indoors the moment storms roll in.

Former Sanibel Mayor Myron "Mike" Klein has died at age 107. Klein sat on the City Council from 1980 to 1988 with two terms as mayor and was remembered as a conservationist, and a celebration of life is set for August 31 at The Village Church at Shell Point.
