Remains found by kayakers in a northeast Cape Coral canal in May 2024 have been confirmed as Rose Marie Gayhart, who disappeared in 1985 at age 23 while living and working in the Cape Coral and North Fort Myers area. The identification came through DNA work with the Livingston County, New York, Sheriff's Office and the District 21 Medical Examiner. Cape Coral police are treating it as an open homicide investigation.

The Multicultural Centre, founded by Leonardo Garcia, runs a drive-up giveaway Sunday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Fort Myers Skatium, handing out filled backpacks and food bags to 3,000 children ages 5 to 12. Neal Communities is the lead sponsor, with Fort Myers Police and the Lee County Sheriff's Office helping. Now in its 27th year, it has grown from 100 used backpacks into one of the county's largest back-to-school safety nets.

🔗 Osprey Nesting on Sanibel and Captiva Clears the Sustainability Mark
In SCCF's first year running the osprey monitoring program, volunteers tracked 151 active nests across four locations and recorded 187 of 221 chicks fledged, an 84.6% success rate that clears the productivity threshold. SCCF took the program over in January 2026 from The International Osprey Foundation, which had run it since 1981. Ospreys eat almost nothing but fish, so strong nesting numbers are a direct read on local water quality and fish stocks.
